  This solo exhibition by Toronto-based artist Stephen Andrews consists of work produced within the last two years and appropriated from the archive of images of global conflict since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. a small part of something larger features seven works that exhibit three different facets of Andrews' current practice. Despite the presence of different modes and media, all of the work is based upon a drawing process that re-creates the look of four-colour print reproduction using a homemade separation technique done as rubbings using window screens and crayons. By breaking down and reconfiguring extant image material into a tactile production process, Andrews converts the supposedly objective, mechanically reproduced images of the news media into a subjective, physically imperfect image marked by the artist's gesture. The viewer is invited to view these serial media images not as discrete units of information, but rather as a small part of something larger, situated between a cause and consequence, reminded that there is a space before the beginning and after the end. Stephen Andrews has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally. His work is represented in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, as well as many private collections.

  Queering Plunder presents recent video installations by five of this country's most provocative and accomplished producers: Aleesa Cohene, Nelson Henricks, Dara Gellman and Leslie Peters (in collaboration) and Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay. Their four works find connections in their unique capacity to challenge hetero-normative narratives in music, cinema and language. Through their collective crush on found media, the artists remake and remix the materials they have appropriated, recontextualizing it to produce sophisticated, poetic and counter-intuitive examinations of the intersections of popular media and a queer unconscious. It is at these intersections that we find the artists asking us to dispense with familiar understandings and move toward a new, queer kind of knowing.
