PAUL HURLEY
Becoming-snail

Originally performed in Cardiff in 2003, and since shown in Glasgow, Bristol and Reykjavik, Becoming-snail is an attempt to embody Deleuze and Guattari's notion of 'becoming-animal', through the adoption of certain characteristics of the garden snail. The particularities of movement and rest, and the deterioration of the performer's subjectivity through the physical endurance that the piece demands, are central to the artist's exploration of a queer becoming that is one of resistance and liberating catharsis.

NOTES

PAUL HURLEY
Becoming-locust

Hurley's most recent becoming-invertebrate performance, Becoming-locust, was premiered at Art Nomade Festival, Chicoutimi, Québec in 2007, and has since been shown in Wales and Switzerland. A much more theatrical interpretation of the concept of 'becoming-animal', it is a joyously kitsch and essentially absurd display of the compulsion of desire and the contradictions of gay identity. Endurance body art with high heels and fresh salad.
