I Can See Queerly Now: Seven Women Speak
a collaborative community video presented by Common Weal Community Arts with emerging artists: Tracy Kydd, Brita Lind, Lori Reid, Ingrid Alesich, Jean Hillabold, Mirtha Rivera, & Tania Wolk

Saskatchewan Filmpool
1822 Scarth St.
3rd Floor

Woven together are seven community based video vignettes, developed by seven women from the Regina Queer community. Each artist shares their particular perspective about identity and defines themselves and their community in their individual video piece. The primary purpose of the self-directed video project is to creatively and artistically challenge the societal stereotypes of queer culture. I Can See Queerly Now: Seven Women Speak moves the viewer from the personal (Stitches, one womanâs story) to the larger community (Everyone loves a Parade.) Other vignettes take the form of experimental documentary and fiction showing us slices of experience: of a mother/ daughter relationship, the spectrum and diversity of sexuality, on how to be a Drag King, lesbian erotica fiction, and queer people and their pets. The diversity of the vignettes show us many layers into the lives of these women, they speak through experience, understanding and humour!

I Can See Queerly Now is a forum for collective voice, to break down social barriers and stereotypes and to celebrate individuality and community! Film and video artists Susan Risk, Dianne Ouellette, Maureen Bradley and Maria Campbell have mentored these individuals from the Regina Queer Community in the development of this video project. The core group, although very different in cultural background, age, and experience, share a common interest: to share their stories in their own voices and using their acquired skills in the production of a professional self-documentary/ experimental video work.
